*************
It was time, there was no mistaking that. Genna felt the vibration of
Lissathīs hum deep in her stomach, where it triggered a spark that
travelled all throughout her body. Hatching time! A smile crept up on
her face that would have her face hurting by the end of the night.
Finally, the moment she and Lissath had been longing for so badly the
past couple of sevendays. And definitely the moment all the hopeful
candidates had been waiting for. Genna could feel the contentment
radiating from her young queen. There was no need to call anyone, as
she heard the dragons of the Weyr pick up on the humming. She made her
way to the chair that had had her hatching attire laid out on it for
the past few days. Dīkere would be there soon, she was sure, and
together they would see off their dragonsī offspring to their new
lives, with their new riders.
Kenirath was quick to inform D'kere of what was happening down on the
sands. The Weyrlingmaster's Second didn't waste a second but quickly
passed from his office into his weyr and made for the clothes he'd had
made and tailored just for this occasion. It was every day that a
man's dragon sired a Queen's clutch and so D'kere wanted to savor
every moment of the experience.
Pulling on a deep blue tunic that made his blonde hair pop, D'kere
flicked the shaggy fringe out of his eyes as he bent over and laced up
his polished, black boots.
Down in the Hatching Cavern, Kenirath flew in and settled on a ledge
just above Lissath, flaring his bronze wings as his arrow-shaped head
swung in rhythm to the humming that Lissath had begun.
"Genna," D'kere smiled as he crossed the Sands to where the young
goldrider stood. "You look beautiful." He leaned in and pressed a kiss
to her cheek.
"You look absolutely ravishing yourself, D'kere," Genna smiled as she
gave him a kiss to the other cheek. With their close collaboration the
past sevendays and her own blossoming relationship with K'ran, the
last bits of her little teenage crush had evaporated to allow for
warm, but purely friendly feelings for the Weyrlingmaster Second.
"Are you as nervous as I am?"
That got a little scuff from Lissath. }: What reason do you have to be
nervous, my Genna? These are my hatchlings, celebrate them! : There
wasn't a doubt in Lissath's mind that her hatchlings would be
perfectly alright and find their lifemates in a heartbeat. She was
there to oversee it all, after all.
As Genna and D'kere took their places, the hatching cavern started to
fill with people. First rather quickly as all the Weyr's inhabitants
hurried for the best available seats, then more slowly as dignitaries
from Hold, Hall and the other Weyrs began to trickle in. Finally, it
seemed just about everyone had found their seats, looking expectantly
at those few eggs that had started to rock to and fro. And just in
time they were, as soon the first muzzle peeked through a newly formed
hole in his egg's shell.
Genna held her breath, truly enchanted as the first little hatchling
clawed it's way into the world. When he managed to rid himself of most
of his egg's remains, it was clear it was a young, baby bronze.
"A bronze!" Genna squeaked as the grabbed D'kere's arm and squeezed it
a little too hard. Surely there wasn't a better sign to foretell a
successful hatching!
D'kere whooped and grabbed Genna up in an excited hug. "A bronze!" He
echoed her words as Kenirath let out a brassy warble of pride. The
crowd in the stands seemed to echo the couples' excitement as they
cheered for the good omen of the bronze dragonet. Watching Kenirath
and Lissath's eggs begin to hatch was unlike any feeling D'kere had
ever felt. He wondered if this was what it felt like to have a kid?
Genna returned D'kere's hug with another tight squeeze and then turned
back to watch the young bronze, just in time to see him impress to a
young man all the way in the front line of candidates. She felt tears
of joy fill her eyes as she saw the ecstatic expression on the boy's
face.
}: Now there's a handsome lad :{ Lissath hummed into her Lifemate's
head as she watched the little bronze impress. Genna wasn't entirely
sure, but she figured to gold was talking about her hatchling son, not
the candidate impressing to him.
There wasn't much time to think about that either, as soon the next
egg hatched. The young green that emerged let out a little frustrated
bugle as her hind leg got stuck in what remained of her shell. She
managed to shake it off rather quickly, though, and soon stumbled
forward into the care of an eagerly awaiting blonde-haired young girl
that reminded Genna a little of herself.
A short distance away from the newest green pair, a young blue fellow
shed off the remaints of his egg with considerably more ease. He
immediately started to plod along the sands, in a straight line that
led him through a few throngs of candidates without much consideration
for their well-being.
"Isn't that Felnix?" Genna asked as she watched the blue finally
reaching his destination in the arms of a tall, dark-haired candidate.
"I think it is. He impressed Nisith," she continued as Lissath
supplied her with the hatchling's name.
D'kere had heard of Felnix, mostly because word traveled fast around
the Weyr, especially when a man was hanging out with J'kri. Being the
Weyrlingmaster's Second, with no current Weyrlingmaster, D'kere had
also taken it upon himself to try and keep close tabs on the
Candidates going into this Hatching. "Good for him."
A candidate with a shocking head of fiery, red hair Impressed a green
dragonet, and from what D'kere could see of them, they were going to
be quite a saucy pair. The new greenrider flicked her hair over her
shoulder, fluttered her fingers at someone sitting up in the Stands,
and then led her dragon off the Sands in a sensual saunter.
**Why am I thinking we'll have our hands full with that one?**
}:Because it's true.:{ Kenirath agreed.
"That's certainly going to be an interesting pair," Genna grinned,
following D'kere's gaze to their newest greenriding pair. Then again,
every new pair that was made spoke to her in some special way. Though
she knew it had to be all in her mind, it almost seemed as if every
one seemed to carry a specific little part of Lissath's personality.
As the hatching accelerated more and more, it wasn't long before she
lost track of individual eggs and hatchlings. She saw more greens and
blues impress, a few browns, until there was only one more egg left.
It was rocking steadily, had been for a quite a while in fact. But it
was almost as if the hatchling inside wanted to be last. Just as the
last of his brothers and sisters left the sands and all eyes were on
him as the single remaining focus of all the candidate's hopes and
dreams, it split right in the middle.
}: And there's my last boy. :{ Lissath said smugly. }: A bronze to
begin, a bronze to end. They will lead their clutchmates to greatness. :{
A disbelieving smile crept up on Genna's face as she saw where the
young bronze was headed and as he found his lifemate, Genna let out a
cheer of sheer joy as practically jumped into D'kere's arms for a
celebratory hug.
"It's Aluka! He impressed bronze! Bronze Zeiranth!" she said with
tear-filled eyes. The conclusion of a beautiful hatching and seeing
her dear friend impress had her sobbing like a child, but she didn't
care. There was just too much emotion to deal with. Lissath had only one
thing to say to conclude.
}: There will be singing in the Weyrling Barracks. :{
