"So here we are," K'mai said as he slid down from Sebeth's neck.
She'd left Orlaith back at the Weyr for obvious reasons but it did mean
she would have to wait until K'mai was ready to leave to go. Rhosyn didn't
have as much trouble getting down from the smaller blue. Standing still for
a moment, she surveyed her surroundings.
"Do you like it?" They'd landed in a relatively flat section that gave
a good view.
She had been here a few times before but it had been a very long time.
Standing still for a long while, she then just turned around, making a quiet
circle. Stopping, she looked back at him. "White as far as the eye can see.
We could get lost here."
"If we didn't have dragons," he joked.
She bent down, her boots crunching in the icy snow. She looked like something
else with the hat covering her head and a heavy jacket on. Rhosyn didn't say
anything for a bit, just moved slowly and deliberately. "Do you really want to
be my friend, K'mai? People tell me I'm hard to get along with. You should ask
Sh'del."
"Well, people tell me I'm easy to get along with, so maybe we even
out," he said. She seemed so lonely and he wanted to help.
Accepting that, she bent down and packed some of the snow into her hand. She
worked at it for some time then without warning, she bent up and threw
it at him. "You're it." Then she took off running.
"Hey!" He brushed snow off his jacket before bending to scoop up some
snow. "Don't think I won't hit a Weyrwoman!" It was good to see her
having fun, K'mai thought as he tossed the snowball at her.
Because she was so small, Rhosyn was also fast. Her low center of gravity
also helped to keep her from falling or tripping. And it wasn't long before she
found a nice hole to settle into. "Allright, time to marshal our resources." And
then she started to make the snowballs, hurrying since she knew he would
come eventually. But she hoped her trap would work.
He saw her disappear but with all the snow it was hard to tell exactly
where she'd gone. K'mai made two more snowballs, one for each hand,
and went stalking after her.
}: I would help, but the queen would scold me,:{ Sebeth said lightly,
content to dig himself a wallow.
She could hear his boots crunching through the snow. Trying to level
out her breathing, Rhosyn didn't move, only to turn onto her belly and watch.
This was exciting a bit. With snowballs in hand and several waiting, she got
ready to throw. Then a smile came across her face. "Come on bluerider...you
can do better than that!"
Lifting one arm up, he hurried toward the sound of her voice.
And Rhosyn saw him coming. **Should I be that mean?** Her competitive streak
reared its head and she smiled for a moment. And then when he came close enough,
she let them fly-grabbing and flinging for all she was worth. She was
laughing the entire time.
One hit him dead on and another clipped his arm as he dodged. "Hey!"
He was laughing, too. He completely missed with one of his snowballs
but another headed straight for Rhosyn.
It caught her in the chest, but she didn't miss a beat. She just kept
throwing. A few minutes later, though, she was almost out of snowballs. So she grabbed what
she had and came running straight at him. "For Weyr, Holders, and Everyone!"
K'mai held his hands up as more snowballs pelted him. "I surrender!"
She stopped short and looked up at him quizzically. "Already? Well
you're no fun." He received a small pout.
"I'm a lover, not a fighter." He posed with one hand over his heart.
"I find I'm whatever the situation requires. Sometimes, my dear bluerider, love
is not enough." Wistful, Rhosyn walked forward and just laid her head on his chest
for a bit. "I think you and I being friends might work out though."
"Good." It warmed him to hear it, and he wrapped his arms around her.
"How about we build a snowman? A nice big one."
It almost felt like she was a kid again even though she wasn't. Still, being
able to be carefree and herself without worrying about anything was a refreshing
change of pace. Rhosyn nodded and followed along behind him, not even feeling
the cold.
