Description: Dawyn's egg hatches.
Location: Smith Hall (NPC)
Date: month 10, day 22 of Turn 3
Dawyn was grading apprentice essays. He hated the job. It seemed to him like the current class of apprentices didn't have a clue about ceramics. Or they simply didn't care. Everyone wanted to be a jewelsmith nowadays, it's was trendy. Dawyn threw his pen away in disgust after drawing one more F. He looked around. He didn't have an office, so he was using the workshop for the hidework. His eyes fell on the ceramic pot in a shelf near the oven. Today was the day the egg there should hatch. He felt excitement flutter in his stomach. But the egg just sat there unmoving. So, he went to pour himself another cup of klah and continued with grading.
It was the faint crack-sound that alerted Dawyn. He turned to look at the egg and saw a breaking line. "Hey, weren't you supposed to rock before you hatch?" he said. Filled with excitement, he went to get the pot and put it on his desk. Then he reached for the bowl with meat scraps and in his excitement and eagerness, knocked it to the floor. "Shards!" he exclaimed. The egg still didn't rock but the line was widening to a gap and something inside was pushing against the shell. The young smith scooped handful of meat from the floor. "Come on, come on, push harder! You're almost out," he urged the firelizard.
Something green suddenly peeked out from the gap in eggshell. "A green!" Dawyn struggled to bury down his feeling of disappointment. He had wished for a bronze. Instead he concentrated to radiate feelings of welcome and love for the hatchling. A green head pushed out and the rest of the firelizard spilled out from the egg.
The hatchling creened hungrily and Dawyn dropped a meat piece next to her snout. She quickly swallowed it and snatched the next one directly from Dawyn's fingers. Piece by piece, Dawyn lured her closer, until she was eating the meat while sitting on his lap. "Hungry still?" Dawyn asked and picked up more meat from the floor. But the little green was now full. She stretched and opened her wings to the full length for the first time. Dawyn could but admire her beauty and grace. Her green wingsails were almost translucent. Her colour was grass green on the top and light-green on the belly-side.
Dawyn placed her on the desk while he quickly cleaned off the rest of the scraps and eggshells. Then he sat down again and the firelizard crawled immediately to his lap. She yawned and curled up. The journeyman scratched her until she fell asleep. Then he pulled the essays back to him and picked up his pen. He was so happy he gave rest of the apprentices better grades than they really deserved.
