Genna

Genna

"Okay, very good! That one is perfect!" Nokala went over the lines that
Genna had written. She was getting quicker at it and improving. Smiling to
herself, she continued reading the lines on the practice hide.

A little "Yes!" escaped Genna at Nokala's compliment, an unmistakably proud
grin on her face. She hadn't really expected to ever improve, but Nokala's
help had proven invaluable so far. She kept silent as Nokala continued her
reading.

As she finished marking the few mistakes, the harper sat back and set down
the hides. "A marked improvement. I think you're still switching a few
letters here and there, but I think after another month or so you'll know
the techniques so well that you shouldn't have any problems."

Genna was grinning from ear to ear when Nokala put down the hides. "I'd
never have expected I'd get this far at all," she admitted out loud. "But it
really does feel easier and apparently my results are getting better as
well. Thank you so much Nokala."

"Eh you're welcome. I'm just glad to say I was responsible for some of the
newest goldrider's success. And maybe someday I might ask you for a favor,
weyrwoman." She chuckled to herself. Nokala found favors came in handy
whenever you needed something especially if half the Weyr was in your debt.
And harpers that didn't get around and make connections with people were no
harpers at all. She was slowly weaving her way into the fabric of
Dragonsfall. "How is everything else going?"

"Anything I can do to help you, Nokala, I'm sure I will be happy to do. And
everything's alright, I guess," Genna nodded. "Nearing graduation now, so
that's exciting." Genna paused, wondering if Nokala would ask the question
everyone seemed so keen on asking these days.

"Hmm and are you looking forward to flying with Teseada and Saibra?" Nokala
didn't know those two that well yet. Then again, there was plenty of time to
give her a reason to later.

"Things have been going well so far," Genna nodded. "Especially since my
confidence in writing started to build." she admitted with a half-smile.
"They are good teachers. And they know what they are talking about,
obviously."

"Obviously. Teseada has been here longer than Saibra has but Saibra has been
riding longer than her Second and has seen many places. You might very well
not end your career here Genna. You should ask her about them. Especially
since you can travel once you start to go /between/." Nokala was a firm
believer in opening the eyes of young people to what was available to them.

"Oh yes, I've been attending hatchings for a while now, I've met so many
people, sometimes my head spins just trying to remember all the names,"
Genna smiled. "I met a lot of the goldriders already and even made a few
friends at other Weyrs. It's amazing the worlds a dragon opens up to you."

"Right but Hatching feasts are not the same as exploring. The places a
dragon can take you to....but you have to remember safety as well." Nokala
tacked that on, thinking of caution. A young gold was very valuable and not
exactly as able as an older one to protect herself.

"Oh yes, I've been to Ista beaches once," she nodded and her eyes suddenly
started to glimmer a bit at the memory. "That was pretty awesome. I hope to
visit more new places all the time when my schedule clears up a little."

"Good then," Nokala replied with a sigh. "I think our time is up goldrider.
How many more sessions do you think you need before you feel comfortable?"

"Just until graduation, perhaps?" Genna said, looking at her lines again.
"And would you mind if I came to you every now and then, afterwards?" Genna
felt nervous at the thought of submitting official records with glaring
errors in them. But she knew she had to start depending on herself now.
