"I wish I'd have ended up here sometimes. At least I wouldn't have to
worry about burning to death," Rhosyn remarked as she put out a hand
to steady herself. Dismounting in a dress was tricky business. She had
thick stockings on underneath to survive /between/. "Hope we have
enough time to get settled." She'd tried to hurry but she had made an
extra effort with her appearance for once for certain reasons.
K'mai guided her to the ground and wrinkled his nose. "All this cold
and snow? No thanks." He shifted to offer his arm. "Sebeth thinks we
have a bit of time." Other dragons and riders were still arriving.
She arranged the cloak over her shoulders then took his arm and followed
K'mai into the Cavern. The humming could be heard clearly and she wondered
how this Hatching would go. Onnyth's last one had been good for the Weyr,
after all. Finding a seat she was happy with she nodded and then parked it
for
the Hatching.
~*~
With the Hatching over and the Weyr happy with its bunch of new weyrlings,
Rhosyn was eager to get to the Feast. Dancing and food were two of her
favorite
things. People parted when they saw her knots though they gave her surprised
looks
when they realized who she was. **Okay okay so I dressed up right and
proper. So what?**
She was almost to a table that was laden with food when she saw a face
and it caused her to stop for a moment. Her hazel eyes didn't believe what
they were
seeing. It was possible but...it had been so many turns. The nose was right
and the
eyes were right and the hair... **Shards!** Not thinking about perhaps why
her sister
hadn't sought her out during the turns when she would have known where she
was
or at least sent a letter, Rhosyn went over and dragged K'mai with her.
The bluerider gave a surprised laugh. "Uh, where are we going?"
"Syngel? Is that you?" She saw the head turn in response to her call and she
knew
then that she was right. It was her older sister.
Unfortunately, when her sister saw her and recognized her she didn't have a
smile
on her face. Rather, there was a look of disappointment. She pulled her
husband
around, though, and seemed not to forget her manners. "Rhosyn...or
Weyrwoman,
I should say."
K'mai hung back, waiting for introductions. He was at least trying to
be all formal and polite and stuff.
Taken aback for a moment by the obvious dislike in her sister's voice,
Rhosyn
turned to K'mai. "K'mai, this is my sister Syngel. Syngel, this is
K'mai-he's one
of the wingriders of my Weyr." Turning back to her family, she was suddenly
caught-
what did one say to a sibling you didn't see in a very long time who for
some reason
seemed to hate your guts?
"Our duty to you, Dragonrider," came the well rehearsed response. Syngel
looked as if she wished she could escape. Arohin, beside her, was quiet as a
stone.
If one was paying attention, however, it could be noted that they seemed to
be looking
for someone.
"A pleasure to meet you," K'mai said. Although no one looked very
pleased. "Wonderful Hatching, wasn't it?"
Syngel didn't answer, judging it might be better to keep the news silent.
Apparently no one had told Rhosyn, after all. **Maybe I can keep her taint
off my son.**
A father's pride made it necessary to make announcements, however. Arohin
spoke before asking his wife. "Indeed. Our son Impressed bronze today." He
stuck his chest out just a bit as if to say, 'better than you bluerider.'
Momentarily shocked, Rhosyn didn't know what to say. Her own nephew had
become a candidate at Dragonsfall and had Impressed bronze and all without
her knowing? **I have a nephew. Possibly more. Why didn't my sister tell
me?**
She looked again to Syngel who looked irritated at her husband for speaking
out of turn. Trying to decide what to do and what to say, she wished her
brothers
were there. It was they who she'd been close to-who she missed. Even after
all
the turns, Syngel thought she was better. Without thinking, she increased
her grip
on K'mai's arm.
"Well, congratulations!" K'mai said. "Rhosyn didn't say anything about
her nephew Impressing. She didn't even mention he was a Candidate." He
sensed an undercurrent of family drama, which was sadly an all too
common thing in the world.
"We're going to go and wait for him. We'll leave you two to enjoy the
feast."
Syngel pulled Arohin in the other direction, eager to leave the unhappy
reunion
behind and see her son. Hopefully he fared well. Hopefully the Weyr wouldn't
turn him into anything like his Aunt. They didn't need another
embarrassment.
As they left, Rhosyn was left standing quietly by. "I wonder...which one he
was."
That was all she knew to say. She didn't know if she should say hello to the
boy,
even if she could find him. Maybe he thought like his parents. Maybe he
didn't know
her.
"I'm guessing 'estranged' then," K'mai said. "Well, we could follow
them and find out. Or ask someone on the weyrlingstaff. There aren't
many bronze weyrlings."
"With the way they acted, there's a very good chance that he hates me.
And I'd rather not have two disappointing family reunions in one Hatching.
Maybe...some other day. I'll ask G'nir. He could keep an eye out." That was
sensible-and something that Rhosyn usually would never have done which
proved just how bothered she was by her sister's actions.
"It's strange. I've always been used to people treating me a certain way
because
of my dragon, my rank, my knots. Never thought I'd be treated like that,
especially
by my own sister. Then again only someone who was related to me would have
the
gall." Her voice held an odd note-one of disbelief mingled with
disappointment. Her
eyes searched the room without thinking, searching for another tall blonde.
He would
never have allowed someone to say those things to her. "I don't think I'll
tell G'nir and
Saibra about that, though."
"How about a dance?" K'mai offered. She certainly looked like she
could use a distraction.
"Mmmm sure," she answered slowly before putting her hand inside his
and following him. It would take some time to get her good mood back for
sure.
