It was another hot day. Wasn't it supposed to be Autumn? The amount of
leaves that had gathered in the vegetable garden overnight indicated it
was, but the temperature was most assuredly at odds with the season. Aluka
had stripped off his shirt some time ago while he cleared out the leaves
and some weeds that had stubbornly refused to just die already. Too bad
that strain wasn't edible; having hearty foodstuffs that could grow through
just about anything were worth their weight in precious metals out on the
fringes.

Aluka had to dig his gloved hands deeply into the soil to get as much of
the root systems as possible, which meant the chore was taking longer than
intended. He straightened up to stretch some kinks from his spine, and
started surveying how much more needed doing when something smacked into
his hip, stinging and startling a curse out of him. He looked down, finding
a rock that hadn't been near his boot previously. He visually followed the
possible trajectory to the edge of the property, and saw Bailan there by a
shrub. She was smiling at him in the way that meant her own chores were
over and she wanted some fun, and he took the invitation offered through
that smile.

Bailan just wanted to get off and she had no trouble using him to do it; he
had known that long enough. But he went along with it because he wanted the
illusion that someone besides his mother actually wanted him around. So he
shed the gloves and took a step forward, and she took a step back, her
smile becoming impish. Ah, so she wanted a chase. He nodded, and Bailan
took off running, wavy black hair streaming behind her. She could run very
swiftly if she wanted to; she had won several friendly races with her
girlfriends. But she wasn't making an effort this time, and Aluka caught up
as soon as they were far enough away from his home.

He shoved a hand between her shoulder blades, and she went down with a
bright laugh on the grass. He slid to a halt and dropped as Bailan rolled
over, and caught her wrists with one hand to pin them over her head. The
lovely girl didn't protest, instead closing her eyes and kissing him
ardently as his other hand slid under her pretty gray blouse. She wasn't
wearing a bust band this time. How daring of her. Her skin was so soft and
warm, the curve of her breast fitting perfectly in his hand. She moaned at
the touch, arching her back, and he drew away to say something teasing.

When he opened his eyes, Bailan was gone. Ilyssia was there instead,
grinning at him merrily. "Hey, don't stop now," she said when he froze in
horror. "Isn't this what you want?"

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Aluka snapped awake, staring wide-eyed into the darkness of his room. Oh,
Ancients. No. Please, no. He rolled onto his side and curled into the
tightest ball someone of his height could manage, feeling a rush of shame
over that dream and his real, physical reaction to it. He pulled the pillow
over his head and tried to banish the images lingering in his mind, to no
avail.

"She's too young," he whispered. "She's too young, and I'm not like him.
I'm not.... I swear I'm not like that stupid, careless, whorin' harper. I'm
not like him at all."

But even as he said it, it seemed like he was lying.

It took a long time for the Candidate to fall asleep again, and his mood
was absolutely filthy when he woke up.
