Reappearance of an Old Friend

Writers: Miriah, Paula
Date Posted: 5th March 2015

Characters: Crolarin, Fymer
Description: An old friend reappears
Location: Sunstone Seahold
Date: month 11, day 22 of Turn 7
Notes: Mentioned: Benani, Vestian

The Harper made a scraggly appearance at Sunstone. Unshaven cheeks,
dark circles under his eyes and a thin face didn't invite others to
approach him. He limped as he walked, one sleeve of his jacket tucked
against his side and it only half filled with a partial limb. He
paused long enough to scrub his face in a small fountain, then ran a
hand through his hair in an effort to appear somewhat less
disreputable. He knew where he was going, it had simply taken him
time to get there.

He trudged towards the Main Hall, glancing around before waving at a
nearby drudge. "Harper Fymer. Fetch him for me." The drudge stared at
him, glanced at his knots and then slowly nodded, darting away to find
Fymer.

Fymer was not pleased of the interruption when the drudge came to
fetch him. He still heeded the summons. "Yes?" he asked when he walked
into the main hall.

"Fymer?" The haggard looking Harper limped forward. "It's been a long time."

"Who?" Fymer looked at the ragged figure a while before recognizing
him. "Crolarin? What in First Egg's name has happened to you?"

"Haven't had a good few months." He replied dryly. "It's a long story,
Fymer." He rubbed at his face with his hand, keeping the other arm
tucked close to him. "I need your help, old friend."

Friend was perhaps bit too much to call their relationship, Fymer had
been senior apprentice when he had been junior. Still, they did go
back a long time and they had helped each other before. "Come along, I
have an office of my own. We can talk there," Fymer said. He also
stopped a passing drudge and ordered for food and klah. Crolarin
looked like he could use it.

Crolarin followed Fymer, his face taut. "Thank you." When they got to
Fymer's office, he took a seat and rubbed his brow. "Tell me, Fymer,
how do you fare here?"

"Quite well, actually. I'm valuable to the Hold. Of course, the new
Lord Holder and I don't have the trust Morin and I had. At least not
yet," Fymer replied.

"Hm." Crolarin shifted in his seat. "I find myself in need of
placement, but I don't believe that I could make the journey to the
Hall. I hear that the new Hallmaster is Vestian and he and I were
never on good terms."

Fymer wasn't so sure he wanted Crolarin around for permanent basis.
"Sunstone is a big hold and it has several wealthy minor holds, I'm
sure we can figure out someplace for you. There's also the new
seacraft hall. They have children there who need a teacher," he gave
few suggestions anyway.

The Seacraft Hall? Crolarin mused silently, then nodded. "Perhaps the
Seacraft Hall would be a good fit. That is, unless they've already
sent for another Harper."

"I haven't heard anything and I do keep my ear to the ground," Fymer
said. "But first we have to fix you and make you look respectable
again. You look like holdless vagabond."

Crolarin frowned and shifted in his seat, tucking his arm closer to
himself. "That happens traveling out in the open for so long." He
scratched at the growth on his cheeks. "I appreciate your help. I'll
owe you."

"Yes, you do, don't forget that," Fymer said and the grinned slyly. "I

can see us both benefiting from working together."

"Is there a place to wash up? Get some fresh clothes?"

"Of course there are, I'll show you around," Fymer replied, deciding
to play a generous host. Having Crolarin indebted to him would be
useful later on.

Crolarin inclined his head as he glanced around the office. He
wouldn't be able to have something like this, not using his name. He
had no other choice, however. Fymer knew him. He hid a disgruntled
sound and pushed the thought of Benani behind him for now. That would
have to be handled when he was able. He rose. "I appreciate it."

"I'm just helping out a fellow harper," Fymer said with a thin little smile.
