Even though the air and water in the Winter Lake was substantially
warmer than the temperature outside, it still wasn't the hot, warmth
of a Weyrlake in the summer. R'axe's arms broke out in bumps as he
stepped into the water. During the winter he wore cut-off shorts and a
short sleeve shirt to bathe Jayth. He had no qualms about going naked
but, shards, it wasn't warm enough for _that_ and he did have some
pride about his appearance.
"Afternoon Talwynn." R'axe said as he caught sight of the greenrider
in the water beside him with her lifemate. "I meant to tell you how
disappointed I was that Jayth did not catch Riveth this go round." He
flashed her a grin as he began lathering up a brush. R'axe remembered
the time that Jayth had caught Riveth because Talwynn had been a warm,
responsive lover, the way a woman should be, in R'axe's opinion.
She gave him a return smile as she kept scrubbing. "It would have been
nice indeed, but she's fickle about picking twice in a row. Maybe next
time."
"Well, I can't complain too much, I like flights whether Jayth wins or
not. There's always someone for me to console." The bluerider grinned
as he began scrubbing at Jayth's left flank.
"Find a good partner this go-round?" she asked. Blueriders tended to
get up the best exploits. The browns and bronzes were a little more
conservative about things. And speaking of conservative - she stopped
in the middle of her work as something clicked.
"Mhm, yes I did, he was very nice." There was nearly a purr in R'axe's
voice as he thought back to it. He had never understood why anyone
would dream of being a brown or bronzerider. Being a bluerider, R'axe
felt he got the best of both worlds.
"Glad to hear it. Nice to know my friends have fun,"
R'axe glanced over his shoulder at her, "And what about you? I am sure
you had fun, I rarely hear complaints after Jodeth wins someone's
flight."
"P'nal's got his talents, and it went well enough." She'd had no
complaints about that part. "It's nice when the dragons introduce you
to new people in certain manners."
"That's true." He'd met J'kri through a mating flight that both of
them had lost. R'axe was certainly glad that he and J'kri had both
lost and he'd just happened to grab the younger bluerider up. The
blonde stepped back for a moment, slightly winded after having
scrubbed Jayth's entire left flank with vigor. "So how's D'kere? I
haven't seen him around lately." He asked as he reached up and massage
his aching biceps.
She winced. Well, it made sense that in a Weyr everyone would eventually
know that people were together. But it was times like this she hated the
gossip chain.
"It's been a couple days for me as well," she said.
R'axe raised his eyebrows, forgetting about lathering his brush up
again in favor and turning and looking at Talwynn, "Do I sense trouble
in paradise?"
"Was anyone ever considering it paradise?" she asked wryly. "I just
haven't seen him, and I don't know why. I thought he was busy with the
weyrlings,but..."
"But?" R'axe questioned, dipping his brush in water, adding more sand,
and then heading back to began scrubbing Jayth's broad side.
"But it doesn't seem like it." She sighed. "I don't know if I should just
ask him directly or what. I'm awful with people."
She vigorously scrubbed Riveth's side, and the green twitched slightly.
}:A bit hard.:{ she complained.
R'axe had a lot of experience with men, considering he was one, and he
loved to love them, "Let me get this straight. Everything was fine,
then P'nal wins your mating flight, and now you think D'kere could be
avoiding you?"
"Yeah, actually." When he put it like that, it sounded more obvious. "But
flights are flights, he's weyrlingstaff." Her tone implied he should know
that.
"True enough, but knowing and feeling are two different things I have
come to find out." R'axe's voice was a bit pinched as he raised up as
high as he could reach with his brush to scrub at a particularly dusty
spot on Jayth's hide. "But then, you should probably just ask him. Men
are pretty simple, they usually want three things: food, sex, and
sleep. I personally don't mind giving up a little bit of sleep for the
former." He flashed a grin.
She couldn't help but smile back. "What if I ask it in a dumb way and mess
everything up? But I guess if he's already unhappy, it can't matter."
"If you ask in a dumb way and mess things up just start taking your
clothes off.... Or wait, maybe that only works on me." R'axe was
absolutely incorrigible, but it was one of the things that made him so
likable. "Seriously though, just talk to the guy. He's probably
waiting for you to come to him. Men are like that."
Talwynn briefly considered the merits of the suggestion. "It would
certainly be a direct way of pushing the issue. I was getting kind of used
to having someone in my life."
Understatement of the Turn. She, who had never before unbent enough to let
someone in for more than a few days at a time - she'd started to find
herself really caring. And now his unexpected absence was...unusual, and
unwelcomed.
R'axe thumped Jayth's hide sot hat he could rinse the one side,
"D'kere's an unusual bronzerider. He's not quite like the other ones
that I know." Quiet and sensitive, more like a brownrider really, if
stereotypes held true.
"Thanks for the insight," she admitted. She couldn't just expect he'd be
as blithe. "I'd rather have an honest fight than an awkward silence."
"I agree. Have it out, fight, yell, then have some great make-up sex
and be done with it." R'axe grunted as he began scrubbing Jayth's
other side.
That startled a laugh out of her. "See, I like people who are plain and
simple like that!"
R'axe peered around Jayth and smiled, "Aye, darlin', but alas,
everyone can't be a bluerider."
"True enough, someone's got to breed the golds so we get more greens and
blues," she returned, glad he was bantering back.
