Ilyssia

Ilyssia

Ilyssia did her best to quell her nervousness and exude confidence and
calmness as she walked onto the hot sands and looked at the glittering
eggs. She also reminded herself that she was young and numerous
candidates stood many times before finding a life mate. Zethan and
Ethzar were prime examples and her eyes sought out the twins wondering
if today would be the day for one or both of them. Her eyes landed on
Aluka next and some of her anxiety inexplicably fell away. Since
they'd first met just over a sevenday ago she'd found that the
handsome candidate had a knack for putting her at ease. Taking a deep
breath her attention returned to the eggs in front of her.

It seemed they had barely formed their semi-circle when a bronze broke
free of his shell and Ilyssia's breath caught in her throat. He was
magnificent! Before she knew it a green and blue hatched as well and
the little female seemed confused, bowling over one of the candidates
in her disoriented anxiety. Without thought, Ilyssia moved to help
her up and as she was steadying the other girl, she felt an insistent,
repeated pressure against the backs of her legs.

}:Here I am. Look at _me_.:{ An equally insistent voice in her head demanded

Ilyssia turned and was overcome with wonder and amazement as she
looked into the incredible blue and green shimmering eyes of the green
dragonet and realized for the first time since that fateful night when
she and her mother had fled their old lives what it truly meant to
belong. Years of hiding and secrecy melted away and she was known as
she never had been before. This lovely little menace was her other
half and from here on out she would never lack a confidant and
companion who loved and adored her. She reached out her hand toward
the beautiful creature that was now her heart, caressing the soft hide
and then scratching above the eye ridges like G'wen had taught her.

"Gwynnyth," Ilyssia whispered in awe. "You're amazing!"

}:That feels good. You are good. We are both good now.:{

**Yes my, darling, we are both more than good now.**

}:Except I'm so very hungry:{ Gwynnyth complained, the color in her
eyes started to take on an reddish tinge.

**Of course you are, dear heart, but we'll take care of that.**

Ilyssia was amazed how she _felt_ Gwynnyth's hunger, almost as if it
were her own. She headed off the sands, matching her steps to her independent,
if somewhat wobbly little green. With ease, she guided her new companion
toward where the Weyrling staff were helping the new weyrlings and
their lifemates. Before she knew it she was settled with a bowl of
raw meat, portioning it out to the enthusiastic baby dragon.

**Slow down or you'll choke.** Ilyssia admonished, refusing to give
the green another hunk of meat until she'd finished the one in her
mouth.

}:It is so good.:{ Gwenneth's mental tone was saturated with extreme
satisfaction. }:You should try some:{

**I prefer mine cooked, thank you.**

}:Cooked?:{

Ilyssia tried envisioning it for the dragonet but the newly hatched
green did not yet have the frame of reference to understand the
concept. She offered another piece which Gwynnyth readily accepted.

**I'll explain another time.**

Gwynnyth was perfectly satisfied to leave it at that and focus on her
meal. Even with Ilyssia's careful portioning, the meat was quickly
dispatched, and the young dragon belched contentedly. With her belly
filled, the small green immediately became drowsy. Several people
stopped to speak to the weyrling pair and offer their congratulations,
but it was soon apparent that Gwynnyth needed to be settled for the
night. Still in awe of how her life had completely and utterly
changed, Ilyssia followed the weyrling staff member to the weyrling
barracks with her new lifemate.
