Description: Taren asks Tavia to take his daughter to River Bluff Weyr.
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 9, day 13 of Turn 7
Taren didn't usually bother his staff-members outside their
workshifts, especially the dragonriders. So it was rare to see him
knocking Tavia's weyr's door. Even rarer was that he had his daughter
with her. Tarine was trailing after him, dressed for outdoors and
carrying a small bag. She sulked.
Tavia had listened when U'kaiah had taught her about the probable
blackouts at Dragonsfall. That didn't mean she realized what was
happening when she woke up in the night shivering in the dark.
Thankfully, her first instinct to reach for a glow instead of the
lights, was the right one. Then all she had to do was light the fire.
she was in front of it with Glory when the knock came.
She opened the door wrapped in one of her bedfurs, "Taren?"
"I'm sorry to bother you, Tavia, but I need a favour. Well, two
favours actually," Taren gave her a lopsided grin.
"Sure," she nodded then instantly regretted the hasty agreement and
looked questioningly from the healer to the child. "Um, what do you
need exactly?"
"Could you please take my daugher Tarine to River Bluff Weyr? I have
family there. In case you haven't noticed, it's getting cold here,"
Taren asked.
"Certainly I can Master Taren," she nodded and smiled at the girl.
"Can you give me an idea where she is at River Bluff? It's a bit
spread out." She stepped back from the door inviting them in and
wanting to close the door before any more cold air flooded in from the
passage.
Taren and Tarine stepped inside. "Do you know where the River Bluff's
lower cavern entrance is? Either my sister or mother will pick her up
from there," Taren answered. "I really appreciate you're doing this
for me," he gave her his best smile.
"Of course Master Taren," she smiled. "I'm sure I can get your
daughter to her aunt and grandmother for a visit. And I can go back to
get her once it isn't so freezing here. Would you like that," she
asked the girl.
"I would rather stay with dad," Tarine replied.
"You'll freeze and I will be quite busy at the infirmary," Taren said,
with a tone indicating they've already had this conversation. The girl
of course had fostermother. "Besides, you're cousins are waiting for
you to come and play with them, you don't want to disappoint them, do
you?"
"No," she replied with resigned sigh. Sometimes she was so much like
her mother it made Taren's heart ache.
Tavia smiled in sympathy back and forth between the father and
daughter. "Well then, just let me get dressed and we'll get you to
your cousins," she smiled at the girl.
"Okay," the girl answered to the smile with her own.
"Thank you, Tavia. I owe you one," Taren said softly.
"Of course," she said brightly to the healer. She hadn't really seen
Taren other than as her boss and a surgeon. This was something a
little different. "Do you want to come along for the ride? I could
hang around for a couple of hours if you want to get her settled and
visit your sister."
It sounded terribly tempting, especially considering how cold it was
in Dragonsfall and Taren was used to tropical climate. He shook his
head ruefully. "I wish I could but I'm needed at the infirmary."
He picked up Tarine for a hug and kisses. "You be good girl,
sweetheart, and don't drive your granma nuts. Have fun and tell my
love to everyone."
"I'm going to miss you, dad," she wrapped her hands around his neck.
"I know hatchling, I'll miss you too," he wasn't shamed of the way his
voice broke.
Tavia looked away for a moment overwhelmed by her own sense of loss.
She hadn't heard from U'kaiah since he'd left and Kaiavin might never
have the chance to know his father the way this little girl knew hers.
Taren obviously loved his little girl and that was a very new way to
look at the healer.
"I'll take care of her Taren," Tavia said softly.
