Maybe Another Day

Writers: Shelly, Eimi
Date Posted: 12th February 2006

Characters: Corvera, U'kaiah
Description: The Cyan Wingleader and the new Weyrwoman have a brief encounter
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 9, day 11 of Turn 3

U'kaiah had heard that the woman who had originally been planned to take Traelyn's place in the Weyr had arrived. She had arrived, and was greeted with the news that now she was the Senior Queen in the Weyr -
now she was to take Jaela's place. He watched her as she stood on the Plateu, surveying all she had suddenly been handed. A Weyr battered and bruised and grieving. She had been handed the keys and told that it was all hers now. The wingleader felt for her as he watched her long brown hair flow on the breeze. But he had felt deep feelings for goldriders before - and now they were _both_ gone. They were both on the bronzerider's mind as he took the measure of the woman who would slip into a role that had become larger than life an more than one admiring eye. Trae with her easy affection, friendly smile, approachable and endearing. And Jaela -
powerful, intelligent, aloof and yet underneath so soft and caring.
U'kaiah wondered if she would be a Trae or a Jaela. He knew it wasn't fair. She couldn't be either one. But shards how he wished she could be both of them.

Corvera was enjoying her solitutde; the past few days had been rather overwhelming. She had left Far Island as a weyrwoman second and arrived in Dragonsfall a Weyrwoman. And although she had always dreamed of running her own weyr, she never thought it would be because of the sudden death of the previous goldrider. Nothing seemed to be going right and even thought her home and her friends were a sort jump /between/ away, they had never been further from her. She just needed a friend at this place...

It was amazing how everything had happened so fast. When had the rules of time changed? He became wingleader, Trae came, Lord Jaryd died, _he_
almost died, Trae left, he found Jaela, and he lost Jaela... all in five short month. _Five_ months... not even half a turn! So many life changing events happened in what was really only a blink in his lifetime. So fast...

Despite all her training and experience, she still didn't feel remotely ready to be Weyrwoman. Of course she had a brave face - she had always been good at that - but at night, when she was alone in her weyr, she wondered what exactly she thought she was doing at Dragonsfall. Things were going to be very different for Corvera for a very long time.

U'kaiah hated the nights. That was when it would all hit him. And sometimes it hit him hard. But he would remind himself that couldn't think about that. He couldn't think about that empty space where Jaela sometimes slept. He couldn't think about Jaela's Weyr, cold and empty, or Trae's for that matter. Trae's Weyr had been inviting, warm, comfortable. It was the kind of place he could walk in and feel at home. Jaela's was different. There was a different kind of warmth in that room. It was elaborate, and beautiful and full of heat and passion - in the bed room as well as outside. Whether they were fighting or loving, if she was in it, there was no where else on Pern he would rather be. But now someone else would sleep there, dream there, love there. And soon Trae's room too would be filled. The thought brought a heavy sadness to the bronzerider's heart. He was loosing them. He was loosing them both, piece by piece...

Corvera cinched her jacket tighter around her waist. Even the weather here seemed hell bent on defeating her, reminding her that she wasn't at home and that she didn't belong here. She felt cold tears beginning to pool in her eyes and decided that if she was going to cry, she ought to do it where no one could witness her weakness. With one final look across the Plateu she turned and headed for her weyr.

As she turned around, however, she noticed another man, seemingly as lost in thought as she had been. He was tall and obviously a rider. He could have been considered handsome, but there was a sadness about him that made him seem somehow faint and indistinct. How long he had been standing here with her, she didn't know, but if he was anything like her, now was not the time to make polite conversation and pretend that everything was all right.

U'kaiah glanced up and their eyes met, the loneliness and solitude was like a frozen bridge between them. If he was ever going to talk to her, to pretend everything was all right, now was the time. But he couldn't open his mouth. He lowered his eyes as he found he couldn't even look at her. She was a stranger who had unknowingly come under the most unwelcome circumstances. Looking at her just reminded him of how much he had lost, and how desperately he wanted it all back. With a sad shake of his head he turned and walked away. Perhaps next time...

The Weyrwoman gave him a slight nod, incapable of a real greeting, and moved away.
