History

Founded shortly after Opal Cove Hold the Tannercraft Hall's initial growth was slow, perhaps due to the very nature of the craft. After all, most cotholders and beastherders could cobble together a passable harness. When the Hall first began operating in the south, the crafters were housed in a row of unused cots just outside of the Hold structure. After five turns they moved to the present location, across the river from the Hold.

Location

Tannercraft Hall is located across the river from Opal Cove Hold, and slightly upstream from the Beastcraft Hall.

Travel Times to Other Locations: Opal Cove Hold - 45 minutes, on foot Beastcraft Hall - 30 minutes, on runnerback Dragonfall Weyr - 50 miles (2 days on runnerback)

Opal Cove Hold is located at approximately 55 degrees south and has a rather chilly climate, with winter lows reaching an average of 19 degrees Fahrenheit and summer highs only an average of 54 degrees Fahrenheit. This climate makes growing most crops difficult, though the ample grasslands produce fine fodder for various varieties of heardbeasts.

Building Information

The first Hallmaster, Kaltian, through shrewd bargaining with other Halls arranged for the construction of a magnificent hall structure. Kaltian had only two demands: the first that the hall complement the style of Opal Cove Hold, and the second that it be one level shorter so as not to show up the Hall that so graciously hosted them in their early years.

The main Hall is a large quad, surrounding a central court. The forward and side wings are three stories tall. The rear wing has a fourth level, comprised of the Master's apartment and offices. On the north side of the Hall are the buildings holding the apartments of the various Masters. Journeyfolk and apprentice quarters are within the main Hall building.

Spread out over the Hall lands are the various building of the craft, the most involved being "The Island". Surrounded by a man made canal, fresh water is drawn in for the soaking tanks and the ice house, where ice is made for freezing hides. The exit of the canal, where water from the tanks is discarded, is located downstream from the nearby Beastcraft Hall.

Technology Level

The ice house has a large generator to power the ice maker. Surplus power is used to light the public areas of the main Hall building, and the Hallmaster's apartment.

Female Policy

While the official policy of the Tannercraft is to support the policy of banning woman from joining the craft, Occhipinti has allowed several young girls to apprentice to the craft, including his granddaughter.

Population and Plague Effects

When the plague struck the south, virtually all of the Hall's apprentices were struck down. Although good number of journeyfolk and masters were afflicted as well, the apprentices represented the very future of the Hall. When the edict banning female crafters was announced, the Hallmaster, Philoric, attempted to circumvent it, but faced being ostracized by the other southern Masters.

Economy

Tanner Hall provides the raw material for much of the leather goods across the continent. In addition the Hall's shops turn out some fine finished goods, such as saddles and footwear. While much of the Halls income is in the form of barter, the occasional mark is still brought in through tuition for holders learning to tan small amounts at holds too small to warrant a full time tanner.

Transportation Information

Tanner Hall is located on Opal River, allowing easy access to Dragonsfall Weyr and the Sea of Azov. Opal Cove Hold is located across the Opal River from the Hall, a 45-minute walk from the main Hall building to the main Hold building. Beastcraft Hall is located downstream, about a 30-minute runnerback ride. Tanner Hall keeps a small stable of runners for the use of residents and a few small boats for short river trips.
