The dragons were humming, and Sanvi's blood hummed with them. She loved Hatchings, the white robes and hot Sands and being so close to the action while Candidates became dragonriders around her. The Sands were the best seats in the house.

She smiled encouragingly at Halia as the Candidates stepped through the door and toward their future. "Go get that gold," she whispered to her friend, but they were quickly separated as they spread out to face the rocking eggs. If Halia Impressed she won marks, and Sanvi could use the marks.

There was a small, hopeful and embarrassing part of her that thought, maybe this time. Maybe she was worth Impressing. But Sanvi was a realist. She'd been on these Sands multiple times since she'd been Searched and knew exactly what was going to happen next: she'd leave alone and go stuff herself with food and wine and dance until her feet bled and then she'd have an enormous hangover the next day. It was a relief, really. Thread was terrifying.

She watched the first egg crack and a pudgy bronze fell onto the Sands as the crowd cheered and the dragons bugled their welcome. He swung his head around, then barreled determinedly forward toward Zorenh, knocking someone over in his haste.

Then it all starting moving so fast-- Nosarre Impressed a green ("Ha!" thought Sanvi,) and Ekirim Impressed, and Halia-- Sanvi hurreid toward her friend as Halia was knocked over and then immediately Impressed a perfect, beautiful little green dragon. She stopped when she saw K’yne haul Halia to her feet. Sanvi wrung her hands, half wanting to hurry after them but also wanting to stay on the Sands. **I"ll see you later,** she promised. Because there was still the gold egg to hatch, and Sanvi desperately wanted to be there when that gold Impressed.

She turned to face the gold egg as it cracked and exploded open-- and the biggest dragonet she'd ever seen shook off the remains of her shell. She looked like she'd been put together by a child, all knobby spare parts and crude grace.

Sanvi's heart clenched in fear as the gold dragonet started heading directly for her. **Oh no. No, no, no--**

And then something banged against her leg and when she turned Sanvi was met with rainbow hued glittering eyes. }:I'm sorry. There was just so much commotion.:{

Everything went quiet. There was just her and the seafoam green dragonet, and all the broken, lonely places in Sanvi's heart suddenly were filled.
}:I am Respellath, and I am your lifemate, Sanvi.:{

Yes, yes you are. Sanvi's shaking hands smoothed across the little dragon's perfect snout, the shape of it new and so familiar already.

Noise returned, and Sanvi turned to the Stands. "She's Respellath!" she shouted, and she was crying and smiling and didn't care. And she was _hungry_. "Let's go," Sanvi said, and she left the Sands walking on clouds.
