Characters: Jylanya, Thayde
Description: Jyanya resigns her position as the Dolphin Hall's Headwoman
Location: Dolphin Hall
Date: month 10, day 15 of Turn 11
Notes: Mentioned: Naton
Jylanya smoothed her skirts before she knocked on the Hallmaster's
door. She took a deep breath and squared her shoulders. She was
dreading the conversation but she just couldn't continue at Dolphin
Hall. Her life had been all she could ask for until her husband's
death and now she couldn't walk down the familiar halls without
expecting to see him round the corner and take her in his arms. It
was just too much pain.
"Come in," Thayde called, rocking back in his chair to see who his
unexpected visitor was.
"Good Morning Sir," Jylanya said as she came into the office. "Do you
have a moment?"
"Of course, Jylanya, what can I do for you?" he asked the Headwoman.
She kept her face from crumpling into another tearful storm by sheer
force of will. "I know you're aware that Naton and I were very close,"
she nodded. "But I find myself unable to continue in my post here at
the Hall. I... just," she took a moment to blow out a slow breath and
look at her hands. "Sorry. I can't walk down the halls without seeing
him everywhere and the memories are too much." She looked back up at
the Hallmaster. "Sir, I can't give you the attention this job needs."
Thayde's brows furrowed sympathetically. He understood completely.
He'd felt that way a little bit himself when Irabel had left, and they
hadn't even been as close as Jylanya and Naton. "I understand. I'm, of
course, sorry to see you go. A competent Headwoman isn't easy to find.
I would be happy to send a reference for you anywhere, unless you
already have something else lined up?"
"Thank you sir," she said, truly grateful. "Not lined up but I hear the
new Lord Holder at Emerald Falls Hold is in need and I intend to reach
out to them."
There were many rumors swirling about Emerald Falls. Thayde wasn't
sure how safe of a place it was, but the Headwoman's position there
was a position that Jylanya more than deserved. "I'll send a letter to
them then, if you'd like."
"I would appreciate that very much," she said. "You've been great to
work for and I will miss the people of Dolphin Hall," she choked up a
bit on the last two words.
"We will miss you," Thayde said firmly. "And I'm sorry about Naton. He
was... " He didn't have the words to describe the other dolphineer.
Not words to do him justice. "He will be greatly missed as well."
She closed her eyes, as tears ran down her cheeks and nodded. Her
throat was still closed and she couldn't choke out any words above a
whisper. "Thank you," she whispered.
She steeled herself for a moment. "I'll give you some notes on the
current staff so you can see who might be promotable before I go," she
said softly.
Thayde considered how Enamra would take the news of Jylanya leaving.
As the Hallmaster's Wife, Enamra was responsible for many things, and
much of that was made considerably easier thanks to Jylanya's work as
the Headwoman. The thought of replacing someone like Jylanya was
daunting.
"How is Tonja taking it?" he asked.
"I don't think she really understands yet," Jylanya lifted her wounded
eyes to his. "She misses him but he's just on another trip." She
wasn't sure how she was going to get through to her daughter that her
da wasn't coming back... ever.
Thayde couldn't imagine how difficult that must be. "I hope the new
location will be a good distraction for you both, then."
"Thank you," she said simply. Then she shook her head. "You know? I
never thought I would leave here," she mused. "I was so happy. For the
first time since,,, I don't know. Since I can remember."
