Persona Profile: A'ten

Writer: Estelle

Name: A'ten
Age: 14
Birthday: m12 d2
Rank: Junior Weyrling
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr

Physical Description of Persona:
Arten is around average height for his age, but growing fast and building up his strength thanks to his work in the tavern. His fair hair is darkening to a deeper brown and his features are starting to show a marked resemblance to those of his father, L'keri, in the shape of his face and his light-brown eyes. Arten doesn't smile as often and usually has a rather serious expression, but when he does, he has all of his father's boyish charm.

Emotional Description of Persona:
Arten enjoys friendship and company, but he's quieter than his wildly outgoing father, deliberately polite, and more cautious than reckless. Sometimes he feels frustrated at being the "sensible" one in the family. As a young boy he had a close bond with L'keri, but as he got older, he became embarrassed by his bad behaviour and resented what he saw as a lack of care for his children. Since his move away from the Weyr they have got on better, but their bond is still fragile. As a result, he's slow to trust others in general and uncomfortable with attention, which makes him sensitive to his father's antics.

After living outside the Weyr for two Turns, he's got used to the different customs of holders and crafters and can blend in to either environment. One trait he has in common is that he can be quite persuasive and good at getting people to feel sympathy for him, which worked very well when he was a little boy and hasn't quite worn off as he's become a teenager.

History of Persona:
Arten was born at Dragonsfall Weyr. His father was a young brownrider, L'keri, and his mother was a Candidate. He has never known his birth mother since she left the Weyr shortly after to return to her family. Instead, he grew up in the care of foster mothers. He and his father moved frequently between assignments as L'keri's problems with authority and discipline worsened.

They eventually moved back to Dragonsfall, but not long after L'keri was injured in a drunken accident and confined to the infirmary at Dolphin Cove for several months. Mortified and losing all trust in his father, Arten left the Weyr on his own, hiding in an empty tithe wagon to avoid detection. He found his way to the tavern near the Vintner Hall at Amber Hills, where he was caught trying to steal food. Fortunately, the tavern master felt sorry for the runaway boy and offered him a job working in the tavern.

When L'keri recovered from his injuries, he began rebuilding his relationship with his son, but Arten was adamant that he didn't want to return to the Weyr. Eventually, though, he was persuaded to return and stand as a Candidate...just this once. To his amazement, he Impressed brown Corvanth and began a new life once again as a weyrling.

Dragon's Name: Corvanth
Dragon's Age: 1
Dragon's Colour: Brown
Description of Dragon:
Corvanth is small for a brown dragonet, not being much larger than his blue clutchmates, but gracefully proportioned, with a slender body, arching neck and long limbs. His hide is a rich klah-brown, shading lighter under his belly and chin. He doesn't generally suffer from a hatchling's clumsiness, and is rather proud - some might say vain - about his appearance. Not at all the typical steady brown, Corvanth is enthusiastic, strong-willed and talkative, and his rider's biggest challenge is getting him to pay attention and follow his training rather than his own whims.

Pets

Winter, Blue Firelizard: aged 2, hatched m12 d10
Arten received a firelizard egg from his father as a twelfth birthday gift, and it hatched a little blue which the boy named Winter due to his pale icy-blue hide. He put a lot of effort into bonding with Winter and training him to carry messages, which came in useful for earning tips from the tavern patrons. He's also had to learn not to steal food or bother Arten when he's working! Winter is affectionate towards Arten, eager to please and responsive to his moods.
