Technicians Hall at Jade Harbour Hold

HISTORY

Officially, the southern Technicians Hall at Jade Harbour Hold was opened on day one of month 11, first Turn of the Tenth Pass. But the first crafters had already moved in five months earlier. Master Technician Chorelia had been chosen as its first Hallmaster. She had led the project to open the Technicians Hall to Southern Pern. The project, which was first initiated some five turns before the official opening, was a great struggle against strong opposition from the start. Several Southern Lord Holders opposed the idea of yet another northern Crafthall and protested against the North's growing influence and ideals. The political debates were heated, to put it nicely.

Master Chorelia visited several likely locations in Southern Continent when she looked for the best location for the Hall. She chose Jade Harbour Hold for it's excellent harbour and sea-connections and because the Lord of that time, Stefan, was open to the idea of female crafters. An old, ruined hold called Windy Hill Hold was selected to be converted into a Crafthall. The hold had been abandoned during the Great Plagues when the holder bloodline died out. The rebuilding was slowed by series of incidents of sabotage and the return of Thread.

LOCATION

The Technicians Hall is located five miles southeast from the Main Hold of Jade Harbour. It is built on the bank of a small, swift-running tributary that joins the main river. The landscape is dominated by a large, steep-sided hill and the windmill at the top of it. A well-kept road connects the Hall to the Hold and Healer Hall.

BUILDING INFORMATION

Tucked under the Windy Hill, the Technicians Hall's buildings form three sides of a square courtyard. The courtyard is large enough for a dragon to land. The north side of the courtyard is the main hall building: a sturdy, utilitarian, two-storey building made from local red-and-grey granite. The opposite side of the courtyard has two rows of family cots. Each cot has three to four rooms and a little veranda. The east side of the courtyard is the stable and the road to Jade Harbour Hold leaves from the stable's north side. West from the main building is the workshop and chemistry laboratory. The smaller building is connected to workshop by a corridor. From space between the main building and the workshop leads a path to the windmill power plant at the top of the hill. A pump house is built at the tributary's bank.

TECHNOLOGY LEVEL

Since the Hall is a Technicians Hall, it has all the modern comforts and some technologies so new that they are not yet used anywhere else. All the buildings (except the stable) have electrical power. The water runs when you open a tap (no cold or hot water though, only lukewarm). There is a working sewage system that allows water closets. The kitchen has both gas-powered ovens and more traditional wood-heated ovens. There is a refrigerated cold store built into the cellar. Water is pumped from the tributary.

FEMALE POLICY
The Technicians Hall is part of the Northern Smithcraft and welcomes female apprentices.

POPULATION AND PLAGUE EFFECTS

Being only recently opened, the Plagues had no effect on Technicians Hall. Most of its crafters are from North. Current Hall population is about fifty people. It can house over one hundred crafters, support staff members and family members.

ECONOMY

As a Crafthall, the Technicians Hall makes its livelihood by selling its services. Its services include emergency repair services (such as repairing the Emerald Falls' hydro-power plant), research projects (such as solar-power research for Jade Harbour), selling products (such as heaters and agricultural equipment), and installation services (such as building a power grid for a wealthy hold).

TRANSPORTATION INFORMATION

The Hall's stable has several runners that are free to use for all Hall residents. There are also a few privately owned runners. Wagons take passengers between the Hall and Hold twice a day. Some people are also known to walk the distance between the Hold and the Hall. The tributary is too small for anything bigger than a canoe.
