Ioven tiptoed softly across the room, figuring the girls had to be
asleep by then. He carried his towel in one hand and his boots in the
other as he had just finished his shift on the kiln and had stopped
by the bathing rooms to wash away the soot and ash before crawling into
his nice clean bed. It seemed Parale, too, was already gone to bed. As
she should be at this time of the night! He set his boots down by his
bedroom door and put the towel over them. It could be put into the
laundry in the morning. Quietly, he slipped into his bedroom door, his
eyes straining to adjust to the dark.
Picking his way carefully towards the side of the bed, he pulled his
tunic up and off over his head and began on his trousers.
Parale was a lump in the bed, under the covers, in the dark. She had
had a long day trying to adjust to so many things and was grateful for
sleep.
Carefully lifting up the covers, he slipped into the bed on what was
apparently now 'his side' and tried to move the mattress as little as
possible as he tried to get comfortable.
Parale was wearing as little as possible as usual in this hot place.
The holder slept soundly on her back, sheets haphazard around her.
Shards. He had forgotten to use the bathroom. Trying as hard as he
could not to rock the mattress too much, he slipped back out of bed and
tiptoed out to relieve himself. Though he tried to be as quiet as
possible, he managed to kick the door as he searched for the knob. He
grimaced in embarrassment as well as pain as he pushed open the door.
Ioven would eventually get used to the new quarters but it seemed to be
especially hard at night. "Sorry," he whispered as he shut the door
behind him once more.
"'S okay." She rolled over onto her stomach and burrowed into the
pillow.
"Did the girls get to sleep ok?" he whispered, picking his away around
the bed. His eyes were beginning to pick out shapes in the dark. This
time he didn't even bother with the sheet as he stretched out on the bed
beside her, propping his head up on his elbow.
"I read them a story. Venrys fought a little at the end, but she finally
gave up." Feeling his weight in the bed again, Parale moved closer, her
hand coming to rest on his belly.
"Did she try Syren's excuse of needing a glass of water before bed?" he
asked with a smile, knowing his little girls. Her hand felt nice.
Ioven reached out to brush a few strands of hair from her shoulder with
his fingers before circling them back to caress her collarbone. It was
nice coming back to a soft, warm body again after a long shift like that
he thought.
"She had to use the necessary and then she wasn't sleepy, but finally
we got it. How did work go?" She adjusted herself to where she could
massage his shoulders.
Shards that felt good, he thought, his eyes closing slightly. "Long and
hot."
"The bath made you feel better though hm? The water running down your
back and belly and legs..." As she kept talking, her hands kept slipping
lower and lower.
"It did feel good," he agreed, his lips curling into a smile. "But you
make me feel even better."
"Oh.. like when I do this?" She gave him a little rub, admiring her own
handiwork.
His breath hitched slightly. "Yes, like that," he managed in a hoarse
whisper. His fingers traced up her thigh. "Maybe I should be the one
making you feel better. I did wake you up, after all."
"As long as you hurry so I can actually get some sleep before I have to
be up tomorrow, I won't hold you responsible." She moved to get herself
in a better position, pulling him so that he could settle into her.
"Well, maybe you shouldn't start something you don't have time to
finish," he gently teased as he settled himself, curling his fingers
around her knee and pulling her leg around him.
"Oh I can finish, but I can't guarantee you will." She watched him and
smiled lazily.
"If it's a race, I'll make sure you get a head start," he assured her
with a grin, fully intending to make sure they both made it to that
finish line, using his lips, hands, tongue and rhythm to edge them
further along. The line was nearing for them both, he could tell, as
they switched positions for the second time. As she laid her head down
by the foot of the bed, Ioven groaned her name and covered her with
his body once more. Leaning down to catch her lips in another
impassioned kiss, something out of place in his peripheral vision caught
his eye. He stopped, eyes wide, just a few centimeters above her lips
and lifted his head. "Syren?"
The little girl was standing quite patiently and silently there behind
the foot board, her eyes fixed on the couple as though she had been
there for some time.
Parale wasn't sure she heard him right, but the one word made her
freeze. Breathing just enough, she waited to find out if she had heard right. Maybe.. Oh Faranth. She shut her eyes and willed it not to be happening.
Completely unphased by the antics of the adults, she said in a rather
tired voice, "Daddy, can I have a drink of water?"
Ioven blinked up at his daughter silently for a moment, processing her
question and trying not to let her hear the uncertainty in his voice.
Finally he replied in a small voice. "Sure, baby girl. Sure. Go wait
on the sofa. I'll be right there."
"Ok," she said without protest, reaching up to rub her eye sleepily as
she turned to go back into the living room.
Once she was gone, Parale was lightning fast as she moved to get
under the sheets and be completely covered. Embarrassed and hoping
that Syren didn't understand and possibly not remember what she had
just seen, she buried her head in the pillow. "Oh bloody shells..."
"It's ok," he said, rolling away from her as he began to feel around for
where his sleeping pants had ended up. Ioven wasn't sure if he was
trying to reassure her, or himself. "I don't think she really noticed
what we were doing."
"Well, have you told her about _that_ yet? Because if she doesn't know
what it is, then she wouldn't know." Parale peeked an eye out at him.
"Of course not! She's only five." There were his pants. Now to try to
find where the front was in the dark... "Even Venrys doesn't know yet."
She subsided, thinking about that. It was likely time to tell Venrys a
little. Not all of it, but at least about how boys and girls were different. She frowned, knowing it was a subject she could ask the Hold's healer about. "Does she at least know that boys and girls are..different? I know I got that speech around this time."
"Of course she does," Ioven said as he stepped into his pants, answering
quickly and not quite grasping her meaning. "Syren's waiting. I
suppose I'll have to tuck her in, too." Shards. Their evening was
over. "You'll probably be asleep when I get back."
"Highly likely, but one can hope. Then again, my part can probably be
accomplished while asleep, if what my friend says is any indication."
She raised a brow in the dark, listening to him rustling around.
Ioven stopped, his fingers on the fastenings of his sleeping pants.
"What? That's horrible! I'd rather not test that, thank you very
much." Even the _suggestion_ was in a way humiliating. Didn't she
_want_ to be awake? Did she intend to actually fall asleep in the
_middle_ of their lovemaking? "If you'd rather sleep, I'd rather you
just come straight out and say it."
"I don't want to miss it, but I am tired. I'm just saying Marla said
that sometimes her husband would...while she was sleeping. Apparently,
it gave her dreams while he was doing it, but she wouldn't always wake
up." Parale thought it curious.
"Well, I'm not going to do that." It just seemed a little too close
to... He didn't want to think of the word. "I've got to get Syren her
water. I'll be careful not to wake you."
"Goodnight then if I'm gone. I'll see you for breakfast." She nuzzled
down into the sheets and made herself comfortable.
