Characters: Ranni, R'nar
Description: Ranni and R’nar come to some understandings.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 7, day 3 of Turn 10
Notes: Mentioned: Aviday, Bryvin

"You'll never believe the conversation I had with Aviday," Ranni said as she came into her weyr to find R'nar sitting in the living area, his sleeves rolled up, hands slippery with oil as he worked on his riding straps.

"Oh?" he glanced up from his work. It still struck him how stunning Ranni looked, having fully recovered from childbirth, and now on the verge of being able to join the Fighting Wings, since she had not been able to graduate with her clutchmates.

"Kobeth rose," she said, stripping off her riding jacket and tossing it onto a hook nearby.

"Oh, yeah, I know, Iorath chased." R'nar said, turning his head back to his work.

"Well, I wish you had won."

That brought the bronzerider's head up with snap. "What?"

Ranni sat down in her favorite chair, pulling off her boots and then tucking her legs underneath her. "If you had won perhaps she wouldn't have hated the flight so much."

R'nar winced. "I take it that she didn't have a good time?"

"No, she did not. She's terrified now of doing it again." Ranni said, choosing her words carefully so as not to give away Aviday's secret. The greenrider picked at a thread of fabric in the chair. "I offered for you to sleep with Aviday, you know, to show her what it can really be like."

"You did _what_?" This time R'nar put the riding straps down to stare at Ranni.

"Well, I told her that she should sleep with you. I mean, you would do that for me, if she wanted to, right?" Ranni asked.

R'nar's dark brown, nearly black, eyes widened. Was this some sort of trick question? Was his girlfriend, the mother of his child, really asking if he would sleep with her best friend?

"No, I wouldn't." There was a hint of irritation in his voice.

"Really? But you're weyrbred." Ranni said with a tilt of her head.

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

Ranni’s brow furrowed in confusion over the tone in R’nar’s voice. “Well, I just thought that...” she trailed off, starting to realize how it might sound once she said it outloud.

“What? That being weyrbred means I’ll just sleep with anyone that opens her legs?” He demanded.

“No, just that you might be more open about sex than holders.” Ranni tried to defend what she had been thinking. R’nar seemed to be offended, but her intent had been the opposite.

“Well, let me make something clear. My parents’ relationship was ruined by them sleeping with other people. I don’t plan on making the same mistake with my weyrmate.” R’nar huffed, picking his riding straps back up.

Ranni’s eyebrows raised. Even though she and R’nar spent most nights together, they had never formally weyrmated, the bronzerider still had his own weyr even.

“Weyrmate, huh?” she asked.

The tips of R’nar’s ears reddened as he realized what he had said. “Yeah,” he said, looking up at her and flicking his hair out of his eyes. “You got any problems with that?”

“No,” she smirked a little, “as long as we move into your weyr... it’s larger.”

“I thought the idea of weyrmating might spook you.”

Ranni twisted a strand of her silky black hair around her finger. “It would have a turn ago,” she confessed. “Okay, maybe five months ago, even.”

“What’s changed your mind?”

“Eranar. I just expected you to act a certain way as a father,” she thought of Lord Bryvin, “but you didn’t. You weren’t possessive, you didn’t treat me like a broodmare. You were really going to let me name our son anything, even if I left you out of it.” She shrugged her shoulders. “I guess I just realized that there was no reason to be afraid of you.”

A smile spread over R’nar’s face, lighting his dark eyes. Hearing Ranni say that she no longer feared a relationship with him was as close to an “I love you” as he would get and he didn’t take it lightly.

“I am going to go to the bathing pools and get cleaned up,” he said, standing. “Why don’t you come with me?”

Ranni could see the invitation in the bronzerider’s eyes and stood as well. “I’ll grab us some clean clothes,” she said, heading for the wardrobe.

R’nar watched her go, sincerely hoping that there was an empty pool when they arrived in the dining cavern.
