}: Ashareth, can Yours come to see Mine? He needs to speak with her. :{

J'ackt sat in his weyr, mulling over the thoughts that came to him
while Alina was out. He wouldn't be able to do what he planned without
help and the first person he thought of was Saidrene. Not only was she
his best friend, but she was also Alina's.

}:She is on her way.:{ Ashareth said without even checking with Saidrene.

"Huh? What did you say?" Saidrene mumbled, still buried in her blankets.

}:I told Zith that you were on your way to see his.:{

Saidrene groaned, pulling the blankets up higher over her head. **Why
would you say that?** Her sleep schedule was entirely out of whack
with the night duties that she'd been serving as her punishment for
being late to Wing practice.

}:You never say no to Zith's.:{ Ashareth said, as if that were
perfectly obvious.

"Blast him," she huffed, knowing it was true. Kicking the blankets
off, Saidrene rolled out of her bed.

When she showed up at J'ackt's weyr there were circles of fatigue
under her eyes, but her glossy black hair was braided out of the way,
and her clothes were clean, at least, if not a bit wrinkled. "You
rang?"

"Sweet Faranth, Saidrene." The words burst out of his lips before he
could think. "Are you sick? It could have waited." He tugged her to
sit on his bed.

"I'm not sick," she insisted as she sat. "I'm just exhausted. I've
been on night duty plus I was given extra sweeprides."

"I shouldn't have bothered you. I didn't think about that. Sorry." He
wrapped his arm around her and gave her a hug. "Want me to talk to
K'ran about it? You're going to be too tired to fight Thread like
this."

"No!" she said immediately. "Don't talk to K'ran. I'm fine." There was
a stubbornness in Saidrene to serve out her punishment in silence,
without help, to show K'ran that she could do it. "What do you need?"

"You're not fine." He scowled, but rubbed her back gently. "He should
fecking well treat you better than this. I should put my boot up his
ass. What I need can wait until you've rested more." He tucked her
against his side and pressed his lips to the crown of her head. He
looked around, not surprised now that she'd not noticed Alina's
belongings in his weyr. "But things have changed. Notice anything
different?"

Saidrene looked around his weyr and began noticing things that she
knew had never been there before. There was a new trunk, a different
quilt was on the bed beneath them, and on the shelves, different
knickknacks, but they were familiar to her... **Alina's things.** The
greenrider sat up straighter, and shoved J'ackt a little, putting some
distance in between their bodies. "Alina's things are here."

"Ow. Those are my ribs." He rubbed the still tender area. "Yes, they
are." The was a look of satisfaction on his face, then he glanced at
her and groaned, rubbing his temple. "Faranth, she didn't tell you,
did she? I thought you two talked."

The greenrider left the bed and took a seat in a chair across the room
instead. "The last time she and I talked she wasn't sure what was
happening between the two of you, so I didn't quite realize that it
was already heading to this. Shells, J'ackt, just a month ago we were
in that very bed together and now you're weyrmated?" Part of her cross
mood was from her exhaustion, she knew, but the other part was because
she felt used by the bronzerider.

"Hey, you knew that this was what I wanted. I love her, Saidrene." The
fact that she'd moved away from him, away from his hug, hurt. "And she
finally said that she loved me. You and I have shared a bed for two
turns and you're my best friend. You're the first person I've told."

"Yes, when she didn't want you then you needed me. Now things will go
back to the way they were when you were courting her." Saidrene now
felt like a fool for sleeping with him again, for breaking the rules
with him.

He sputtered. "What? I'll always need you and want you around,
Saidrene. Faranth, you should know that." He rubbed his face, unsure
of what to say. "Can't you just be happy for me? I'm actually happy.
Really and honestly happier than I've been for a long time. If she'd
be okay with you and I sharing the bed, I'd drag you to bed every
chance I could. I enjoy my time with you. But you know her,
Saidrene. She'll take the cousin thing even worse." He rose,
scrubbing his hand through his hair in frustration. "Shaffit, I can't
give both of you what you want. "

"No, you can't." Saidrene said as she stood. "I am happy for you
J'ackt, you deserve some happiness, but you can't have your bubbly and
eat it too, you know? That's life. Things can't be like they were
between us and I am going to need some space to... I don't know... be
able to treat you like a cousin." Since that was all they were now,
apparently.

He stared at her, wondering if their friendship was also in tatters
too. "Alright." Something in his gut hurt deeply, so he didn't
approach her again. "Go get some rest. You need it."

"See you, J'ackt." Saidrene said on her way out, although she did stop
at the door to say, "Oh, and congratulations. I mean that." The
greenrider slipped out of the weyr.

He doubted that she did. He sighed, ran his hand through his hair and
sat down heavily on his bed.
