With permission from the Weyrwoman to stand at the next Hatching,
Ernola sent Note off to visit Garreth, her brother's brown dragon. She
didn't want the little green to get in the way.

She was excited in a way she hadn't been in a long time. As old as she
was, she fully expected to be a Harper forever. Not that it guaranteed
she'd impress a dragon at her first standing! She wasn't that
confident.

Stepping into the infirmary, she looked around and inquired, "Urlene?"

A young man wearing Junior Journeyman knots turned at the sound of her
voice and walked over. "She's in the back. Can I help you with
something? Did you have a meeting scheduled with her?"

Tucking her loose hair behind her right ear, she gave a sheepish grin
and answered, "Well, no, but it was suggested by Cyradis that I come
get a check up, being a new candidate and all. What's your name?"

The Journeyman visibly winced. "Oh, you didn't?" He looked behind him
and tugged at his ear, thinking. "Well, she'd be the one to do it, I
guess. I'm Journeyman Liren. Uh...I'll see if she can see you. If
Cyradis asked, then I'm sure she will." He looked over his shoulder,
then back, pointing to an empty cot. "Have a seat there, and someone
will be with you in a moment."

"Pleasure to meet you, Liren. I'm Ernola ..." she said as he walked
away. She was beginning to think she should have waiting judging by
how he was reacting. Shrugging, she moved to the cot and sat down,
grateful that she'd sent Note away.

She didn't have to wait long before brisk steps were heard and Urlene
appeared from around the corner of the curtain. "I received a message
from Cyradis, you're..." She looked down at the note. "Ernola? I'm Sr.
Journeywoman Urlene." Her face was calm and cool, not revealing any of
her thoughts. "I see that you're going to be Standing for the clutch?"

"Yes, ma'am. It's a pleasure to meet you. I hope I haven't come at a
bad time," she said as she tried to see why Liren had seemed so
nervous. Urlene seemed just fine to her.

"It doesn't matter. If the Weyrwoman wants you seen, you get seen."
She lifted her brow. "You're expected to have a full exam, including
one for pregnancy. How long have you been at the Weyr?"

"Only a few days but I've been in and out of the Weyr for a few turns,
ever since my brother impressed his brown. I'm a Harper by trade. And
I've no problem taking a pregnancy test as it will be negative."

"I have to check, anyway. Unfortunately, I can't take your word for
it." She gestured to the cot. "Lie back. Have you been sick or exposed
to any illness in the last two sevendays?"

The Healer's abruptness was a bit disconcerting but Ernola did as
instructed. "No, ma'am," she answered then took a deep breath. It was
good that she'd been exposed to this type of exam since Harpers and
Healers often worked closely together. Besides, the quicker this went,
the quicker she'd be done and Urlene could get back to whatever she
was doing.

Urlene was quick about the exam, pressing carefully on Ernola's belly
before continuing with the more intimate aspects of the examination.
She washed her hands after, then made notes. "You seem healthy enough
to Stand. I suggest you next go see the Headwoman to get your assigned
cot and chore list."

Relieved that it was over, Ernola sat up with a frown. "So I will be
in the barracks? Pity but I'll manage," she said as she stood up then
carefully smoothed out her skirt. "Thank you, ma'am. If there is
nothing else, I'll be on my way. I don't want to keep you."

"With eggs on the Sands, every Candidate is in the barracks." She made
a final notation. "There's nothing else, unless you're in need of
anything." She looked up, no smile on her face. "Good luck."

"Thank you," Ernola said with a nod as she turned to leave. Good thing
she knew the Weyr as well as she did without having to ask where the
Headwoman would be. Urlene looked like she had much more on her mind
than dealing with a candidate's questions. "Have a good day, ma'am."
