When he woke up that morning, the knots in his chest had loosened somewhat. He had a small smile for the servers in the dining cavern, and he was marginally less grumpy throughout the day. Even the drills were less tedious. And when he thought of Ilyssia, it didn’t make him want to go back to bed. Not really. A’kua wasn’t sure why it was happening, but he figured he didn’t mind.

At the end of the day, when he was hanging up Zeiranth’s harness after a quick patch and repair on a worn section, A’kua found himself at loose ends. He’d eaten, it was too early for bed, but too late to find Firelloa for a chat; she was spending the night with her friend Nariise. He didn’t have any night duties to handle this time, or anything else to do.

Lost in thought on what to do with himself until he was tired, A’kua’s eyes fell on his gitar. The sight brought him up short as he realized he hadn’t sung ever since Ilyssia told him she had found someone else. He hadn’t even tried to compose anything. His heart just hadn’t been it, but now.... Maybe....

A’kua took the gitar off its pegs and brushed off the dust before he sat on his bed. The strings were tuned, and he ran through an experimental warm-up just to see how he would react. When he didn’t feel teary, he hesitantly started picking out the notes of a sheet of music he had read over and over, but had never played because the thought of doing so had hurt too much. Now, though, it was once again something he needed, and the more he played, the easier it became. One rehearsal of the music lead to a second, then a third, until at last he began to sing the words his father had composed what seemed like a long time ago.

“How many of you people out there
Have been hurt in one of life’s affairs,
And how many times did you swear you’d never care again?
How many long and sleepless nights?
How many lies, how many fights?
Now why would you put yourself through all that again?

Life is pain, I hear you say; life is a cruel and bitter way
Of paying you back for all the faith you ever had in your brain.
How could it be that what you need the most
Could make you feel lost off the coast?
You never want to feel so sad or alone again.

One day you could be looking for someone in rainy weather,
You find a portrait of them smiling at you from when you were still together;
You could be walking down a street, when who should you chance to meet,
But the very person you’ve been thinking of all day?

Why don’t we turn the clock to zero, re-start,
Even though we’re still so far apart,
We can both begin a brand new day.
Turn the clock all the way back,
I wonder if I can make it back?
I’m thinking in a brand new way.
Turn the clock to zero, mister;
You’ll never know how much I missed you,
But we’ll start up a brand new day.

It could happen to you, just like it happened to me:
There's simply no immunity, there's no guarantee!
I say life is such a force, if you find yourself in it,
You need some time for reflection;
You think, hey wait a minute, wait a minute,
Wait a minute, wait a minute,
Wait a minute, wait a minute-

Why don’t we turn the clock to zero, re-start,
Even though we’re still so far apart,
We can both begin a brand new day.
Turn the clock all the way back,
I wonder if I can make it back?
I’m thinking in a brand new way.
Turn the clock to zero, boss;
The river's wide, we'll swim across.
We’re starting on a brand new day!
Turn the clock to zero, buddy,
Even if the future is muddy,
We started up a brand new day!”

}:You were singing!:{ Zeiranth exclaimed when the music ended. }: Does that mean you’re better now?:{

A’kua had to think about that. “No,” he finally said. “But I will be.”
