Description: A'kades takes some time to meet with A'dryn.
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 2, day 6 of Turn 8
Notes: Mentioned: B'jon, D'lorn
A'kades had carved off a few candlemarks every sevenday which he devoted to meeting with the leaders of the nines, checking up on their performance as well as using them as a barometer for the temperament
of the weyrling class. Next up was A'dryn. As he waited for the green weyrling to arrive, he reflected that he hadn't expected the holdbred boy to be one of the standouts of this class. But his friendships with
Lanniya and others meant people looked to him, whether or not the boy knew that.
"Good day, sir," A'dryn said as he entered.
"Good day, A'dryn. How's Nalarith doing?"
"She's doing very well, sir." The greenrider smiled. "The more complicated drills get, the more she seems to enjoy it."
"She's doing very well in them, being a fine example of what green dragons are best at." A'kades was looking forward to seeing which wing would want them in the future. "Are you excited for the next batch?"
"Of drills?" A'dryn wasn't quite sure what he meant.
"Yes. This is a complicated set coming up. Night drills are difficult, and catching drills can be overwhelming. But I have faith in you two, or you wouldn't be leaders for this round."
A'dryn's chest swelled with pride. "Thank you, sir. I'm confident we will continue to do you proud." Being a good dragonrider meant everything to him. He might be a disappointment as a son and a man, but at least he'd earned the praise of his weyrlingmasters. And truly, wasn't protecting Pern far more important than being a steward at some small Hold?
"Is there anything you've noticed in your group you think I need to know about?" the second asked. He'd seen a few issues, and wondered how much the weyrling had spotted.
Certainly A'kades must know, so this was a test. A'dryn drew himself a little straighter in the chair. "Trelpim sometimes has difficulty controlling her dragon. She gives her too much leeway. And W'korl is overconfident. I worry he doesn't have proper respect for the danger of Threadfall." Most of his clutchmates were nervous to a greater or lesser degree. Too much fear was a problem, but so was too little.
"Excellent points. Do you expect either of them to be an issue in the next drills? If you did, what would you do?"
"I'm more worried about W'korl." A'dryn thought for a moment. "If I was running drills, I'd try having more rope dropped his way. Perhaps being tagged with paint might make him realize it might be live Thread next time."
"That's a smart idea. It will show him they're not as invulnerable as they think," A'kades agreed.
"I certainly hope he realizes it before something terrible happens." Their Blooding was coming soon and the chances of losing one or more of their clutchmates was high.
"I'd rather it happen in training than in a live Fall, for sure. It's usually more survivable." But that was a grim topic he really didn't need to worry the weyrling with. "Outside of your group, how have things been? Anything been going on in your life that you need to discuss?"
A'dryn thought of B'jon and his face warmed. "Um, no sir. I'm still struggling to adjust but I'm... making progress." D'lorn already knew he'd gotten the experience he needed for Nalarith's flight so he didn't want to repeat that to A'kades.
"That's good news. I know it's hard to feel like you fit in at the Weyr. It took me several Turns," the bronzerider said.
**And it was probably easier for you.** "I appreciate that you and D'lorn have been patient with me."
"Not an issue. We want you to be comfortable with us and come to us if you need anything. Either for yourself, or for people in your group. You're doing so well and I think you're going to be a fine wingrider."
He ducked his head, both pleased and embarrassed. "Thank you, sir. I truly believe this is what I'm meant to do."
"Nalarith thinks so," he agreed. "If there's anything else I can do, let me know."
"I will, sir."
