"Where do you think you're going, "R'taran?" B'kar called out as the
other brownrider strode past the table, obviously headed for the exit.
The short, stocky man stood to pull his wing mate over to a table
occupied by a couple of riders from Hurricane Wing and a women he'd
not met. "The Harpers just started playing and tomorrow is a restday.
Besides, I want to ask you about that modification to the riding
straps."
"Oh, uh," R'taran shook his head. B'kar was always trying to get him
to socialize more, but despite a self confidence bordering on
arrogance, R'taran usually kept to himself. Though he'd come to accept
many aspects of Weyrlife, he had yet to fully embrace all of them. "I
can't -"
"Yes, you can," the much shorter man insisted practically pushing R'taran's
large bulk into a chair. "I'm getting you a drink," he said, walking
away without a backward glance.
Seeing he had little choice in the matter, R'taran turned to
the other riders of the wing and came up short, realizing that the person
wearing the pink frilly confection, was not a woman at all but his
Wingmate V'con. He knew his shocked expression was evident, but he
tried to mask it as he greeted the group. "Evening," he said giving a
general nod.
"Evening," V'con said with a cheery nod. "How're you today?"
"Good, ah and you? How's Cacholetyth?" R'taran felt as if he was
babbling and hoped he didn't sound that way. He tried to focus on
V'con's eyes and ignore his attire. Why was V'con wearing women's
clothing? R'taran had come to accept the necessity of varied
relationships in the Weyr, but this was something altogether different
and he found it extremely disconcerting.
"Probably batting his eyes at that pretty little green who just arrived."
V'con laid back a little in his chair. "You know, I think E'lok rides her.
Although I wonder what sort of ride he'd be if Cacholetyth catches her."
R'taran's eyes widened and he was rendered speechless. He understood that
V'con rode blue and that it was perfectly natural for him to consider E'lok
in this way, but he generally avoided conversations involving flights for
this very reason. His plight was made no easier by the fact that the
bluerider, whose features were fair and delicate enough to belong to a
woman, was posing the question while wearing women's clothes. Reminding
himself that camaraderie was very important to the cooperative efforts of
Wingriders, R'taran nodded and as nonchalantly as possible said "I don't
think I've met E'lok yet."
"Oh you must!" V'con got to his feet and waved over a fair haired man,
almost tubby for a dragonrider. "There's something to hang on to," the
bluerider said with a grin. "Never did like those ones who thought they
needed to be thinner than the girls."
Trying desperately hard to show absolutely no reaction to the
bluerider's affable words, but wishing B'kar would return with that
promised drink, R'taran rose to his feet as well. "Ah, very good to
meet you E'lok. Welcome."
The greenrider offered his hand. "Nice to meet you. It's R'taran isn't it? B'kar
pointed you out to me." Although he spoke pleasantly enough to the
brownrider, it was obvious enough that his eyes were taking in the
bluerider. "He said he was going to get another round of drinks in."
R,taran shook the greenrider's hand, thankful that he was looking at V'con
and not himself. "Yes, it's R'taran."
"And here I am. Not to worry," B'kar said jovially. "I'd not leave you all
high and dry."
Accepting an ale with thanks, R'taran downed half the mug in one go, wishing
it were something stronger.
V'con took his drink from the table. "I'm sure you two will get on really
well," he said after taking a sip. "Never hurts to get to know any rider
here."
Hoping, the green rider didn't want to get to know him too well, R'taran
gave a nod to V'con's statement. "Always a little easier to work with those
you know."
"Which is why you need to sit and drink with us more. You're too young to
always have your nose in those musty old hides. We're far more interesting.
Aren't we lads?"
"Indeed," V'con said. "We're not scary, are we?"
Though not scary precisely, R'taran did find V'con somewhat alarming in his
pink frilly clothes. He had to admit the bluerider was actually quite
personable, even if unsettling. No matter, he was a Wingmate and routinely
put his life on the line like all the rest. The brownrider lifted his mug
"No, not scary at all. Here's to the riders of Hurricane Wing ."
That toast got a glass raised by all around the table. "Our wing!" echoed
V'con.
